1995 Civil War Battlefields Commemorative Coins
A commemorative coin program including a $5 gold coin, silver dollar, and half dollar was authorized for the preservation of the Civil War battlefields. The issuance also coincided with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Gettysburg National Military Park.The coin designs were created by Don Troiani, a private sector artist known for depicting battle scenes. The issues were popular amidst a busy year for commemorative coin issues.
The $5 gold coins were limited to 300,000 coins, but sold less than 80,000. The silver dollars were limited to 1 million coins, and sold less than half that amount. The half dollars were limited to 2 million coins, but sold around 440,000.
