1996 Smithsonian Institution Commemorative Coins
The Smithsonian Institution Commemorative Coins were issued for the 150th anniversary of the establishment by Congress on August 10, 1846.The program included $5 gold coins and silver dollars.The gold coin depicts James Smithson and the logo of the institution. The silver dollar depiction the building on the obverse and an allegorical goddess on a globe on the reverse.
The coins were available in uncirculated and proof versions, sold individually or in two-coin and four-coin sets. A young collector's set was also offered.
