1999 George Washington Commemorative Coins
The United States Mint issued a $5 gold coin to mark the occasion of the bicentennial of George Washington's death. This is an interesting bookend to the 1982 Washington Half Dollar, which was issued to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth and to start the modern commemorative era.The obverse design of the 1999 George Washington $5 Gold Coin is a left facing portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser. The reverse depicts an eagle. The design was originally intended for the Washington Quarter.
The issue was more popular than the last gold commemorative issue and sold 22,511 uncirculated coins and 41,693 proofs.
