2006 San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coins
To mark the centennial of the "Granite Lady", the United States Mint produced $5 gold and silver dollar coins for the Old San Francisco Mint. This issue makes use of two classic coin designs, but unfortunately the reverse designs. The obverse of each coin features an image of the Old Mint. For the reverse coins, the designs were taken from the Morgan Dollar and the Liberty Half Eagle. These are both famous coins that had been produced there.
Sales were rather slow compared to what they might have been if the designs chosen had been the obverse of the classic coins. Total distribution for the silver dollar was around 240,000 and the $5 gold was around 60,000.
