2009 Louis Braille Commemorative Coins
The 2009 Louis Braille Silver Dollar was issued to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this important figure. He was the inventor of the Braille system of reading and writing for the blind and visually impaired.The silver dollars carried a maximum authorized mintage of 400,000 pieces. The obverse features a portrait of Louis Braille, while the reverse showed a child reading book with Braille characters. Collectors eventually ordered 80,754 of the uncirculated version of the coin and 133,064 of the proof version.
